CNC internal grinders are a kind of precision internal grinding machine which makes use of an abrasive wheeled unit for achieving high-quality, fine-quality finishes in fabrication work. These machines use a mechanism that involves a spindle, and a variety of grinding bits with different designs and sizes. The CNC internal grinding machines are designed in a way that they incorporate a variety of machine tools that can be programmed into the machine. The CNC internal grinding machines make use of two different strategies for delivering precision results. One strategy includes a form of geometry called the concentric circle application which is commonly found on CNC lathes. In this method, the work piece is mounted along a circular path, which will then be fed through a mandrel or other rotating mechanism. This concentric circle has a particular diameter value that can be used to control the depth of each of the grinding stages.

The second strategy employed by internal grinders is to ride along a fixed, horizontal axis. With this type of machine, the work piece will move along a horizontal axis in order to transmit milling motion between the inside grinding wheel and the outer grinding wheel. This allows the machine to grind into all areas of the surface, even though the inside of the work piece may not rotate. The outer wheels will typically be stationary in this condition.

In terms of the technology used inside CNC internal grinding machines, there are two types that are most often found inside machines. The first type is known as the Cartesian spindle which uses two parallel metal spindles which are able to spin in precise manners. The inner part of the machine can sense where the two spindles are and will move on a similar plane accordingly. The other type uses a type of technology referred to as a rotary vane which allows the machine to detect any changes in elevation along the vertical axis. This is important because these types of CNC machines can provide much greater precision than other types.

An internal CNC grinding machine will typically consist of two separate components which work in tandem to provide the needed grinding capabilities. These components are typically a desktop unit and an off-the-shelter spindle. Typically, off-the-shelters are used because they are less expensive and often easier to maintain. The desktop unit will have its own motor, which is responsible for rotating the spindle at the desired speeds. Once the grinding machine is turned on, it will continue to spin at these speeds until the material to be ground reaches the right height.
