Tilting Table – Its General Features and Functions

Rotary tables are commonly mounted on multi-purpose machines to give the user additional rotating capabilities for various machining operations. A tilting rotary table or RTF is an economical method to provide a three-dimensional, multi-axis multi-material machining abilities. It is the ultimate solution for any machining operation where accuracy, economy, versatility and cost reduction are required. They can be used in CNC mills, routers, drill presses, lathes, milling machines, plasma cutters, stamping presses, etc. RTF can be directly mounted in place of the original machine or can be an add-on to the existing machine.

Rotary Table

The major benefit of a rotary table or horizontal machine is that it provides accuracy in performance as well as economy of movement. The most obvious feature of a horizontal milling machine is that it has large pieces of cast iron plate moved vertically in a horizontal plane. This feature allows the operator to divide large, long and thick stock by centering the piece into the appropriate slot. Centering requires precise adjustment and this is another feature of the tilting rotary table.

Rotary tables generally have fixed or removable horizontal or vertical positions. The fixed position indexing mechanism in most of them is set at zero degrees. In addition, there is usually a center guide rod which is moved vertically by a motor to lock the table horizontally. Indexing mechanism uses two sets of vertically moving guides that are aligned with each other.

For heavy duty and complex projects the tilting rotary table can also be mounted on a vertical tilt reel which has its own support system. The cost of tilting Table is determined according to its size and the material used. Material for the table should be able to stand up to the torque and the heat generated during use. The material should also be robust enough to withstand the high speeds that the table can generate.

To provide ergonomic comfort, tilting rotary tables usually have contoured seats. These seats have a contoured backrest and padded seating surface. The adjustable heights of the chairs allow the users to customize the level of their comfort. There is a wide variety of tilting rotary tables available in the market. Some of them are manual, some have electrical controls and some of them have electronic controls. Manual tilting Table is more convenient and used for smaller projects while electronic controlled Table is preferred for larger projects and heavy weight work.

While purchasing a tilting table consider its size, your needs, price range etc. A small horizontal table can be used as a horizontal lathe if your project is small and simple. But a large, bulky, and complex horizontal lathe is not appropriate for your small projects. If you are buying a wooden tilting table for home use, select a strong and durable wood. Choose a wood that is relatively easy to cut and shape. You can then get an electric or mechanical mechanism to operate the tilting vice in any direction you prefer as well as in any direction the wood moves.
